Family Feud over Bingo win
When we play bingo with our friends and family and agree to share all winnings, a written contract to that effect is probably the last thing on our minds, however maybe that is the thing that should be in the forefronts of our minds after a family feud over a bingo win. The battle over a £1 million win has continued for two years and cost £200,000 in legal fees.
Jean McCullagh and her sister and two sister in laws regularly played bingo together at the Mecca Bingo Hall at the Forge in Glasgow and had a verbal agreement to share any winnings. However after a £1 million jackpot win on the National Bingo game she reneged on the deal and refused to share.
A bitter two year battle had ensued, a battle which cost a fifth of the total win to fight. This battle got right to the steps of the High Court this week before the winners decided to settle out of court.
When Jean and her sisters were celebrating with champagne at the Mecca Bingo hall when they won they can’t have imagined what a negative impact one of the biggest wins in UK Bingo history was going to have in their lives.
All four bingo players have considerably less money, some solicitors have got very rich and sadly a whole family have been torn apart over a feud over a bingo win. It certainly makes you wonder about the verbal agreements you may have with friends and family.
